Great Experience at the Fair

Dear Editor,

Dain and I would like to thank everyone who stopped by the “Nysoe for County Commissioner” booth at the recent Columbia County Fair. It was great to be on the main fairway to see and greet so many people. The weather was perfect, and while Dain was busy listening to people express their thoughts about problems in the county, I had a fun time giving out honey sticks with little notes on them saying “BEE WISE, VOTE FOR NYSOE” Some of the kids came back many times, getting a handful for their “brother,” and that was great because we had hundreds of them to give away. We were also happy to be able to assist people to register to vote if they needed help. But probably the best reward of being at the fair, were the small children. After asking their parent, we offered them a big, red, helium balloon and you should have seen their faces! Big smiles of approval as we tied the string to their wrists. You could tell, we had just made their day.

What I observed as first-time superintendent of the produce entries in the pavilion is there is no lack of dedication by community members. My part was very little compared to the dedication and hard work of people like Rose Englebright and Donna Hanger. These two ladies worked long hours, with little sleep! They were amazingly patient and still managed to have a sense of humor! They are just two the unsung heroes that continue to make the Columbia County Fair a success!

All and all, it was a great weekend. Dain and I enjoyed every minute of it and would not trade our experience of seeing and talking to so many people. Now we realize why Dain’s heritage stretches back more than four generations—Columbia County is a truly great place to live because of the people.
