Betty Callahan passed away on Nov. 28, 2019 in Mesa, Ariz. with family by her side. A celebration of life will be held at the First Christian Church in Waitsburg on Dec. 8 at 3:00 p.m. A celebration potluck will follow at the Lions Building at the Waitsburg Fairgrounds.
Betty was born to Carl Joseph Dunn and Leona Anna Hermanns on a farm north of Waitsburg near the old Cockburn farm on April 24, 1932, her dad's birthday. She attended school in Waitsburg, graduating in 1950. Betty attended Spokane Business School and began her career as a telephone operator. In 1954 she married Lester Daniel (Corky) Callahan in Idaho. Their son Lester James (Jim) was born in 1955, followed by a daughter, Karen Louise in 1958. She retired after a long career as a teller for banks in Waitsburg and Walla Walla.
Corky and Betty loved the square dance. Her favorite pastime was playing cards with family and friends. Her daughter and granddaughters benefited from the beautiful crocheted Barbie clothes, which have been passed to other generations. She was an avid gardener, canning the produce she grew. Betty was a long member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Waitsburg Gun Club.
She is survived by her son, Lester James (Jim) and Debra; daughter Karen Lousie and Ed Livezey; a sister, Maxine Attebery, grandsons Bill, Brian, Thomas James (TJ) Callahan, granddaughter Maranda Abrams; great grandchildren Daniel and Kyrsten Callahan and Arya Abrams; and numerous nieces and nephews, sister in law Nadine Scoggin, brother in law Glen Callahan and Kay. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, Lester Daniel (Corky), brothers James Garth Dunn, Louis Carl Dunn, Melvin Joseph Dunn; a granddaughter Meri Melissa (Missy) Knight.
