Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley

Dayton School Board Report

December 5, 2018

DAYTON—High School Senior Kaleigh White was interviewed and accepted by members of the Dayton School Board at last week’s meeting to be a student representative on the Board. White said she is interested in political science and the opportunity to be a representative on the board will give her a “feel for things.”

White cited a lack of respect by students for their fellow students and teachers as problematic, as well as a lack of student participation in sports and clubs. She said she is willing to report to the ASB and work with the ASB to address those issues, and act as a liaison between the students and the Board.

White is hoping to attend Gonzaga next year, majoring in political science.

Business Manager Paula Moisio said she is waiting for an athletic combine financial report from the Waitsburg School District so she can get an accurate picture of the costs for the Dayton School District. Both Mosio and Superintendent Doug Johnson said costs to the District will not significantly exceed the costs of Dayton’s stand-alone athletic program.

Johnson told the board that Columbia County Health System nurses have accomplished hearing and vision screening of students in record time, and they have been working to assist children and their families with a head lice problem at the elementary school. Immunization compliance has been successful, as well, he said.

“Our partnership with CCHS continues to be a very positive solution for school nurse care,” Johnson said.

Johnson said there have been no applicants for the vacant seat on the school board in District 3. He said that ESD 23 may need to get involved if an applicant can’t be identified.

Interviews for an open custodian position will take place in the near future. Director Dave Bailey has agreed to serve on the selection committee.

The Board gave approval to move forward with completing repairs to the sloped part of the high school roof. There will be a change order for Garland Roofing to purchase materials now, but actual work will take place next summer, said Johnson.

Johnson said the project will cost around $65,000, but the District spent $30,000 below budget on the roofing that was done this summer. The District will look at reprioritizing projects that are already planned, in order to accommodate this new expense, he said.

Jim Suega was approved for MS Girls Basketball Head Coach. Karen Huwe was approved for MS Girls Basketball Assistant Coach. Kayla Lewis was approved for HS Assistant Cheer.

The board has moved their next meeting to Jan. 16.
