Photo caption: Brian Luders, son of David and Teresa (Keeney) Luders, received the Eagle Scout Award this past December 9. This achievement is the highest scout center at Long Lake in Nine Mile Falls, Wash. Brian is the grandson of Donna Keeney and the late O. D. Keeney of Waitsburg; and the nephew of Clint and Patricia Froke of Waitsburg. He is a sophomore a St. George’s School and a member of Assumption Parish of Spokane.

With mixed emotions, Waitsburg fifth graders experienced Ski Bluewood and hopefully learned to ski.,Emma Philbrook, one of the fifth graders, shared their experience. Quoting some students: “I was on the platter pull all day. It was loads of fun!”, “Every time I crash, I learn from it”, I skied the freestyle run: The jumps were fun!”, By the end of the day, we had warmed up to skiing.

Twenty Five Years Ago

The motto of Lions International is “We serve.” Dick Greenville, a Lions club member for over 30 years, takes the motto seriously. He serves. Greenville, a member of the Eastgate Lions Club in Walla Walla, was recently honored for his years of service to the club and community when he received the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, named after the founder of Lions. It caught Greenville, 63, b surprise. “I was over overcome,” he said, “it doesn’t get much nice that that when you’re in Lions.

A Waitsburg resident with an excellent track record in historic preservation is interested in talking with the Mayor and City Council in Waitsburg about possibly renovating the Ritter building, in the downtown business section. Wife of Waitsburg High School principal Dan Butler, Ginny Butler said the couple might speak with the city Council this week. In the past two years, there has been four offers from people who wanted to turn the building on Main street into businesses ranging from a Fiberglas-car shop to a pizza parlor. None of the proposal panned out. The most recent idea, to turn the building into a video store, did not work out.

January 23, 1969

Using a themeof “Friendship” Miss Susan Webber, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Webber, was installed as Worthy Advisor of Assembly No. 8, International Order of Rainbow Girls, Sunday afternoon, Jan 29. Installing officers were Ann Payne, Christy Bond and Beryl Skog,.Dayton, Worthy advisors:, Don Rogers, Grand Deputy, Mrs. David McConnell, chaplain, Gwyn Ferguson, marshal; Mrs. Berger Chase, recorder;, Mrs. Kenneth Gohlman, musician; and Cynthia Ely, crown bearer.

The NFO is an organization which allows the farmer to use the only effective weapon he still has in his political arsenal-his prodection-to emprove a bad situration.This would sum up the thoughts of Glen Epich, NFO chairman from Othello, Washington, who spoke to a group of local farmers at the Waitsburg school on Wednesday night, January 15. One of the range goals of NFO is to help boost the price for farm produce. The parity price on wheat is $2.66 per bushel. At the present time, the average return on farm investment is less than 6%, which does not include a fair wage for the farmer and his family.

January 28, 1944

Dick Gosney was named scout master this week of troop 35, Boy Scouts of America.

Homer Reed ,Phil Ender and Kenneth Gohlman were elected to the Board of Directors of the Commercial Club at an election held Tuesday evening. Jack Wright and Carl Dilts are hold-over members.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard Davis are the parents of a son born, January 21, at Brining Hospital in Dayton. He has been named Raymond Eric.

One Hundred Years Ago

January 31, 1919

Dave Barnes met with an accident Tuesday while splitting wood. The axe slipped and his ankle to the bone.

The Waitsburg band has resumed practice after being practically disbanded for the past yearor more. Some of the band boys are gradually drifting home again from the Army service and it is hoped that we will be able to get together a strong organization again.

A brood of young chickens was hatched at the Will Harris Farm north of town January 21. These are the first young chickens reported hatched in this vicinity this year. Will says they are strong, healthy chickens and are growing like weeds

Albert Hollowell says the girls in Kansas have the biggest of any girls he ever saw. Albert is engaged in the photograph business and he ought to know

Todd and Maxwell have opened a branch store in Starbuck. S. A. Esry has charge of it.

The revival meetings at the M. E. Church are still in progress, and with growing interest. Many have been led from darkness to light through the able teaching of the gospel, and the end is not yet. Amen.

We have received a copy of George Starrett’s seed catalog of 50 pages and contains much information of value to all who plant seeds. And what is better than all, it is from an honest man who deals honorable with all men.
