Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WALLA WALLA—Providence St. Mary Medical Center is seeking stories and photos for a book being written on its history by a local author.
The hospital has contracted with Linda Andrews to write a book on the history of the hospital, St. Vincent Academy and the legacy of the Sisters of Providence in Walla Walla. The sisters arrived in Walla Walla in 1863 to open a school at the request of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Over time, the sisters began caring for the sick as well, and recognized the need for a hospital. St. Mary Hospital, the city’s first hospital, opened in 1880.
Community members who have photos or stories to share for possible publication in the book are asked to send their material to Cecilia.mckean@providence.org by May 31. Not all submissions can be published, but contributors whose story or photo is used will be acknowledged in the book.
