DW Softball heads to State in #2 spot

State tournament play begins Friday in Yakima

MOSES LAKE, Wash.- The DW softball team was one of eight teams competing in the regional tournament in Moses Lake at the Paul Laurier Athletic Complex on Sat., May 18. Qualifying District 5 teams included #4 DeSales, #2 Dayton/Waitsburg, #1 Kittitas, and #3 Liberty Christian. District 6 qualifiers were, #1 Lake Roosevelt, #3 Tonasket, #2 Brewster, and #4 Waterville/Mansfield.

DW takes Tonasket 8-2

In game one, DW faced Tonasket to take an 8-2 win. DW got out to an early lead due to some wildness from Tonasket's pitcher. In fact, none of DW's first five runs would come from a batted ball. All of those runs would be scored from bases loaded walks, wild pitches, passes balls and hit batters. It wasn't until Neylan Bryan's 2 RBI double in the 5th that DW would score earned runs. Sadie Seney's skilled pitching allowed only one hit over seven innings. Mackenzie Dobbs and Mackenzie Forney combined on a double play in the 6th.

#1 seed Lake Roosevelt falls to DW 11-1

In game two, faced the #1 seed from the north. Lake Roosevelt was 20-1 on the year, coming into this game with their only loss coming against Brewster 14-11 at Brewster. There were lots of DW hits in this game with the whole lineup contributing. Tatumn Laughery lead the way with three hits. Big innings in the 4th and 5th put this one away as DW would win 11-1.

"Our second game of the day was with #1 seed Lake Roosevelt where again our defense dominated for the first two innings. Pitcher Sadie Seney saw only three batters for each of the next four innings. We ended the game in the 6th inning with a double play by Kaleigh White to McKenzie Dobbs to Mackenzie Forney, our second of the day, to give us an 11-1 run rule victory," said Coach Shane Robins.

DW falls to Kittitas 14-2

Game three was a rematch of the district finals with DW vs. Kittitas. DW put themselves in an early hole, down 9-4 after three innings, but came roaring back in the top of the 5th to tie it at 10-10 on a Mackenzie Forney RBI. DW gave up four runs in the bottom of the 5th and Kittitas would hung on to win 14-12.

"Our final game was the championship match with rival Kittitas. Hits were strong on both sides. We started with three runs right away and then trailed for three innings. In Inning 5 we tied things up with 10 runs each. We fell behind by 4, and only had time to bring our score up by 2 to end the game at 12-14. Neylan Bryan had another double for the day, and Elise Steinhoff to Kaleigh White gave us our third double play for the day. Kittitas is a superb team and we played well against them. Dayton-Waitsburg is headed to the State Tournament as the #2 seed for District 5/6," said Coach Shane Robins.

As the #2 seed in the State tournament Dayton-Waitsburg is well placed to advance deep in the state tournament. A final rematch with Kittitas is possible and if it happens it would be for the state title as Kittitas is the #1 seed overall and on the other side of the bracket.

DW plays next at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima on Fri., May 24 at 11 a.m.
