The Walla Walla Union Bulletin and the Dayton Chamber of Commerce will offer a free Facebook Seminar on Monday, April 11, at 6 p.m. at the Dayton Library in the Delaney Room. Social media coordinator Jeremy Gonzalez will show guests how and why using social media like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter to grow their businesses.

April 11, 1996

The annual Junior Livestock Show in Waitsburg April 5-6 was a success, sponsors report. Participants included Millie the bulldog who put on her game face for the dog show. She and owner Grant Godard of Lowden were in the 4-H competition. Jesse McCaw of Waitsburg showed beef. Mary Reeves of Dayton 4-H cleaned lambs.

Under contract with the city of Dayton, Bill Clarys of Bill’s Yard and Handyman Service, was providing cemetery landscaping service as of last week in Dayton.

Kevin Corn, a student at Walla Walla Community College, who plans to transfer to Eastern Washington University, has been selected as an outstanding student at a conference at Central Washington University for his work in promoting anti-drug and alcohol use among college students. Corn volunteered over 500 hours of his time this year to promote “healthy lifestyle choices” among students.

Fifty Years Ago

April 22, 1971

Mr. and Mrs. Ken Lightfoot had a portion of ground next to their home that needed to be planted in grass. They were debating how they would go about tilling the soil, and apparently asked for advice from one of Waitsburg’s foremost gardeners, Ralph Rankin. Ralph isn’t much of a man to talk about a project—he likes to go ahead and do something about it. So to save some back-breaking labor he merely took his roto-tiller to their house and did some plowing. They appreciate it, Ralph!

Featured film at the Dayton Drive-In Theatre this Friday and Saturday nights will be films of the flight of the champions, Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali. Sharing the bill will be The Dunwich Horror, H.P. Lovecraft’s classic tale of terror and the supernatural featuring Sandra Dee, Dean Stockwell, Ed Begley, Lloyd Bochner and Sam Jaffe.

Seventy-Five Years Ago

May 3, 1946

Miss Corlene Carson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Carson, has been chosen as May Queen for 1946. Her court includes Irene Casey, Eleanor Donnelly, Roselle Collins, Sue Collins, Wanda Buchan, Molly Kellogg, Marily Otterson, and Betty Williamson.

Contestants for Race Queen this year are Barbara Arthurs, Ruth Wolfe, Janice Roberts, Jacqueline Alexander and Jean Erwin.

The McCown-Clodius Warehouse at Coppei burned Saturday afternoon destroying some feed wheat and peas. The entire building was demolished and was still burning this week.

One Hundred Years Ago

May 6, 1921

Mrs. Jack Cushin entertained the Dorcas Society at her farm home in Spring Valley Wednesday afternoon. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Bussabarger, Mr. and rs. Frank Mills, Mesames Miller, Shuford, Lewis, Forrest Conover, Glen Conover, Houtchens, Wallace, and Miss Velma Keiser.

A.M. McCoy, lumber dealer, reports that Clarence Burch has just completed some remodeling to his residence. Clyde Mason is building an addition to his home just east of town.

Postmaster and Mrs. Adams have moved to Mrs. Wright’s home on Jay Street until they move into their permanent location. Mr. and Mrs. D. C. Rees have moved back to Waitsburg from Buhl, Idaho. They have already moved into their home on Fourth Street where the Adams family have been living.

One Hundred Twenty-Five Years Ago

May 1, 1896

Frank Sweazy and family will leave on Monday evening for California on a visit of two months.

Rose Glen this week received an additional 220 new roses. The collection now numbers 247 varieties.

Our A.C. Dickinson has been elected delegate to the national Prohibition Convention to be held in Pittsburg, Pa. on May 25.

H. S. Conover and family have moved into their new residence on Preston Avenue and a new barn is now being erected on the place.
