Winter Ride

Around the Valley: with Karen Huwe

It was a cold and windy November afternoon when we joined my sister and brother-in-law for a birthday ride up Eckler mountain. In the past, we have ridden our ATV quads for a friend's birthday ride, and for Joanie's birthday, we took the trip in our side-by-side ATV. These birthday rides always seem to be during the winter.

Even though we have had plenty of rain lately, there still was some dust flying on the gravel road. We passed farm machinery in the fields and windmills spinning on our way to the snow-covered ground at the monument and beyond to a canyon where you get a great view of the little Tucannon.

The monument sits at an intersection, where you can go down Patrick's trail to the Tucannon or continue towards Godman. The monument's plaque gives the reader a glimpse into the construction of the Kendall Skyline Road, a mile-high road completed in 1928 under the direction of William H. Kendall.

We would have benefited if our side-by-side ATV had window enclosures and a heater, but at least it was not raining. Winter is a time to layer up to be outdoors to enjoy nature. Overall, a good birthday ride.
