"The Swimmers" by Julie Otsuka

This short novel begins with the unspoken rules and norms used by a community of swimmers at an aquatic center. A crack that forms in the pool's floor unhinges the rules and coincides with one swimmer's battle with dementia-a powerful and heartfelt story.

"The Covenant of Water" by Abraham Verghese

The follow-up to Verghese's bestseller "Cutting for Stone," his new book follows three generations of a family, from 1900 to 1977, that suffers a peculiar affliction. In every generation, at least one person dies by drowning.

"Piranesi" by Susanna Clarke

From the author of Jonathon Strange & Mr. Norrell is a book set in an alternative reality of an infinite labyrinth of rooms, corridors and an imprisoned ocean. Piransi lives in this house with one, or maybe two, other inhabitants who hold a terrible truth that begins to unravel. Fans of Neil Gaiman and Madeline Miller will enjoy the surreal and haunted world created by Clarke.
