Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
DAYTON-Waitsburg's head coach for middle school football, JJ Calzadillas, said his team played "really good" at the jamboree in Dayton on Monday, September 11. In fact, he thought it was the best showing of a middle school football team he had ever seen.
The boys were a little nervous getting off the bus and seeing the "much bigger" players from the other teams. After the Cardinals started playing and playing well, they no longer cared who they played. They felt like the "Kings of the field."
All thirteen boys saw playing time, and each contributed to the team's success. Juca Beckman, Gavin Mikesell, Alex Zuniga, and Gage Mynear played tough at their Cardinal lineman positions. The teams played ten offensive plays and ten defensive plays.
Against Liberty Christian (LC), Sawyer Harshman took a pitch from quarterback Liam Kiefel, behind great blocking by Uriah York, and took the ball into the endzone from 20 yards. The Cardinals gave up a touchdown to LC, and in the second series, Carter Barron picked up a fumble created by Harshman and would have taken the ball to the end zone; however, the play was called due to no defensive touchdowns in the jamboree.
The Cardinals shut down the Dayton Bulldogs, only allowing two yards in ten plays. The Cardinals scored three touchdowns against the Bulldogs. Kiefel threw two touchdown passes, one to Barron and one to York. Harshman ran for one touchdown.
Against Desales, the Cardinals scored four times and only gave up one touchdown to the Irish.
Assisting Coach Calzadillas were Jared Wheat, Chris Andrews, and Gavin Waggoner. The middle school football team will play in Waitsburg on Monday, September 18 against Desales at 4 p.m.
