WAITSBURG-The Waitsburg Cardinals varsity boys basketball team won in their first home court game of the season, 59-9, against Prescott on December 15. Ryland Kilts scored eight points, and Blake French added six as the Cardinals took an early 18 – 1 first-quarter lead. Kilts continued the hot hand, scoring fourteen points, including hitting three 3-point shots in the second quarter. Kilts finished the game with 26 points, French 13, Reuben Yutzy 7, Logan Seal 4, Jack Karl 4, Wyaiit Booth 3, and Lucas VanHoose scored 2 points.
The varsity boys lost at Desales on December 16. With the loss, the Cardinals have a 2-3 record heading into winter break. The team's next home game will be Saturday, December 30, against Pomeroy.
The Cardinals girls lost a hard-fought game against Prescott on December 15. It was a game where Waitsburg made as many 3-point shots as 2-point shots, five each. Prescott made more 3-point (10) shots than 2-point shots (7) and won 46-32. Alyssa Hollingsworth scored 20 points and rebounded seven; Abbi Paolino scored 11, rebounded six, and had five steals; and Cheri Mathews scored one point.
At Desales on December 16, the girls struggled against the Irish defense and lost 50-14. Hollingworth scored 8 points, and Paolino scored four and had five steals. Mathews scored a point and rebounded four.
The girls will next play on Kison Court on Saturday, December 30.
