Civics Bee Essay Deadline extended to January 22

WALLA WALLA — The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation has extended the essay submission deadline for the local competition of the National Civics Bee. Essays must be submitted by Monday, January 22.

The National Civics Bee is an annual competition to encourage young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. The Bee is open to all middle school students, grades six through eight, at the time of entry.

In the first round of the local contest, students must submit an original 500-word essay. A panel of judges, consisting of local business and community leaders, will review the essays and select 20 finalists to participate in a live quiz final round. Prizes for the local competition are $125 for Third Place, $250 for Second Place, and $500 for the First Place Winner.

The top three winners of the National Civics Bee Local Competition will compete for prizes between $250 and $1,000 in the state competition. The first-place winner of the State Finals will go on to the National Bee, competing for a top prize of $10,000.

The Walla Walla Valley Chamber encourages middle school-aged students, parents, mentors, teachers, and nonprofit organizations working with youth to visit https://www.wwvchamber.com/civicsbee for more information on the essay topic, competition rules and prizes and for students to submit essays.  The website will be updated as additional information is made available.

The Walla Walla Valley Chamber is also looking to partner with local businesses through sponsorships. Any organizations interested in supporting the local Walla Walla Valley National Civics Bee competition can reach out by emailing ceo@wwvchamber.com or calling 509.525.0850.
