Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - Waitsburg high school basketball teams played Yakima Nation Tribal teams on Friday, February 2, at home on Kison Court.
The junior varsity boys lost their game 50-22. The young men battled hard against the Eagles. Teegan Kenny scored 11 points and rebounded eleven. Rollin Carpenter had 14 boards, and Jayton Gleason scored eight points and rebounded eight. Fredy Chavez scored three points and rebounded six. Tyler Coulston, William Daves, and Trace Nesje assisted their team with defense, rebounds, and steals.
The Lady Cardinals lost 58-10 to Yakima Tribal on senior night. Makenna Barron scored eight points and rebounded four. Abbi Paolino rebounded six and had three steals. Cheri Mathews scored two points and had four boards. Kaydance Tiner had six boards. Alyssa Hollingsworth, Sarah Daves, Victoria Whitmore, and Addison Crenshaw worked hard on defense.
Against the Eagles, the Cardinals varsity boys team had a 13-6 lead after the first quarter. The Eagles went on a 10-0 run to open the second quarter and came within three points at halftime: 24-21.
Waitsburg hit their shots in the second half and played tough defense to outscore the Eagles 31-22 and win 55-43. Ryland Kilts led the Cardinals in scoring with 33 points. Blake French had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Reuben Yutzy finished with five points and had ten rebounds, and Wyaitt Booth scored five. Lucas VanHoose contributed two points, and Jack Karl and Logan Seal played solid defense for the Cardinals.
The game against the Eagles was a must-win game for the Cardinals to stay in contention for the playoffs. Their only hope was for Touchet to beat Yakima Tribal the following Saturday night to force a playoff with the Eagles. Yakima Tribal won on Saturday and secured the fourth-place slot, eliminating the Cardinals from postseason play.
