Waitsburg HS Winter Sports Awards

 WAITSBURG-The high school Cardinals held their winter sports awards assembly on Wednesday, March 6, at the high school auditorium. Boys and girls basketball, cheerleading, and wrestling student athletes were recognized by their coaches.

Cheerleading

Coach Vickie Hamann awarding Makenzie Castillo*, Ava Childers*, Pilar Diaz Easton*, Mattilynn Carter*(**), Hope Adkins*(**), Bea Karl*(**), Marion Duncan*, Madison Kaehler*(**), and Cedar Stegall*(**) were honored for their spirit throughout the season.

Easton was named Most Improved, Carter was voted Most Inspirational, and Stegal earned the Most Valuable Squad Member honor.

Wrestling

Coach Lash LaRue recognized his wrestlers for the season. Graycen Teal received the "Stringbean Award," Jarod Hankins the "Team Captain and Most Valuable Awards," and Koyen Fortune the "Band-aid Award." Victor Whitmore (**) received the "Nitty Gritty Award, and Akayden Mikesell (**), who was injured during the season, was honored as assisting LaRue.

Girls Basketball

Coach JJ Calzadillas presented awards to the girls basketball team, student coach, and manager. Alyssa Hollingworth*(**) won MVP, Makenna Barron* was recognized as Captain, and Abbi Paolino*(**) received the Most Inspirational Award. Most Improved was Cheri Mathews* and Victoria Whitmore*, Kadance Tiner*, Addison Crenshaw*, and Sarah Daves *(**) were also recognized by their coach as hard-working basketball players. Ethan Carpenter was recognized as an assistant coach, and Lillian Carpenter as manager for girls' basketball.

Boys Basketball

"I expect my players to give 150%," said Boys JV and Varsity Basketball Coach Roy Ramirez.  The coach along with assistant coach Trey Potts recognized the following players who worked hard throughout the season and gave their coaches 150% at every practice and game: Trace Nesje (**), Rollin Carpenter (**), Tyler Coulston (**), William Daves, Fredy Chavez (**), Jayton Gleason *(**), Logan Seal *(**), Lucas VanHoose *(**), Teegan Kenney *, Jackson Karl *(**), Reuben Yutzy *, Blake French *(**), Wyaiit Booth *(**) and Ryland Kilts*.

Yutzy received the Defensive Player of the Year award, Booth was recognized as Mr. Hustle, and Most Improved was Chavez. Most Valuable Teammate was French, and Kilts was named MVP.  Kilts was named to the All-Conference first team and the All-State team. The All-State game will be played in Bellevue on March 16.
