Practices for the Waitsburg Cardinals this past week have shown some gains since last weekend's football jamboree in Pomeroy pointed up areas in need of improvement. Waitsburg, under new head coach Jeff Bartlow, showed well despite being bested 2-1 by Asotin and tying Pomeroy 1-1. Bartlow expects Enterprise to challenge his Cardinals in Waitsburg's non-league season opener Friday at 7 p.m. "They were second in state last year and have quality athletes though I guess they lost some to graduation," he said. Having played in the state championship game and lost, Bartlow expects Enterprise to be "hungry" and gunning for the Cards, who have beaten them two in a row. "We'll need to be aggressive and work hard at improving this week," Bartlow said.

The 17th annual Salmon Barbecue sponsored by the Commercial Club will get underway promptly at 7 p.m. on Wednesday evening, Sept. 18th, in the Community Building at the racetrack. E.V. Mikkelsen is in charge of the general arrangements for the fall event with Bob Patton handling cook duties with a lot of able assistants. One local farmer's wife is corralled long enough to make the sauce for the salmon, otherwise everything else is prepared by the all-male crew. To accompany the succulent salmon, which is roasted over an open pit, will be baked potatoes with sour cream, crisp cole slaw, french bread, lots of hot coffee and cold beverages, and relishes. Price for this feed has been raised to $4.00 per plate due to current prices, with adults only allowed to partake. Plan to attend. It's a great evening.
