Dayton City Council discussed grant for ADA street compliance

DAYTON — Mayor Roger Trump called the Dayton City Council to order at 6 p.m. on October 9, 2024. Trump and council members Teeny McMunn, Michael Smith, Kyle Anderson, James Su’euga, Laura Aukerman, Joann Patras, and Shannon McMillen were present at City Hall. 

Dayton resident Theresa Eier addressed the city’s contract renewal negotiations for law enforcement services with the county. She provided the council members with a detailed document with resources on the topic, which may encourage citizen participation.

Sheriff Helm thanked local citizens and businesses for donating to the National Child Safety Council, raising about $2,850 in donations to promote child safety.

Helm said the sheriff’s office, in conjunction with the Columbia County Fire District #3 and Columbia County Emergency Management, will hold its annual law enforcement trick-or-treat event, Halloween with Heroes. On Thursday, October 31, between 3 and 5 p.m., kids can come to the Columbia County Courthouse for free goodie bags and hotdogs.

The sheriff said the sheriff’s office purchased a drone with grant money. In December, a deputy was assigned to operate the device and undergo FAA drone pilot training for certification.

Several deputies are also beginning a water safety program for community youth.

Rundell said October was fire safety month and reminded everyone to install smoke alarms on every level of their houses and test them monthly.

The county is still looking for a volunteer from the medical community to fill position #1 on the county board of health.

Rundell said the county commissioners from Columbia, Garfield, and Asotin decided against adding a second Superior Court Judge position after determining the proposal to be too expensive.

According to Rundell, the county is moving forward with the purchase of the former Columbia Pulp office building at 115 E Main St. Some of the county’s offices will move to the new building after leaving rented space and possibly selling one county-owned building.

Trump said the city received a grant to modify intersection sidewalks and curbs on Fourth Street between Main and McCall Streets, bringing them up to ADA standards.

The meeting adjourned at 6:40 p.m. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 5, 2024, at 6 p.m.
