Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - Last March, seven Waitsburg students earned the chance to attend the Amazing Shake event in Atlanta, Georgia. It was the first time students from Waitsburg participated in the program, and they learned a lot about poise and leadership skills.
The Amazing Shake teaches students cultural skills that last a lifetime. They learn the importance of making eye contact when speaking, using a hardy handshake, standing up to speak, working hard, following directions, and lending a helping hand.
On Thursday, October 17, this year's fifth-grade students were introduced to the four houses of the program, Altruismo: The House of Givers, Amistad: the House of Friendship, Isibindi: The House of Courage, and Reveur: The House of Dreamers. Each fifth grader learned which house they would be inducted into by popping a balloon filled with the house colors: black for Altruismo, red for Amistad, green for Isibindi, and blue for Reveur.
Students have started the mini-Cardinal-way competitions and will attend a mini-gauntlet at Preston Hall on November 25. The top 25 students from these events will attend the state competition in Mattawa, Washington, to see who will represent the school at the National event in Georgia in March 2025.
On October 30, community volunteers will host a haunted house and trunk-or-treat event to raise money for students to attend the National event in Georgia next year. The trunk-or-treat in the parking lot will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The haunted house in Preston Hall will begin with the lights on for a non-scary option at 5 through 5:30. The lights go down after 5:30 for a traditional haunting until 7 p.m.
