Waitsburg Loses Homecoming Game to Pirates

WAITSBURG - The Waitsburg Cardinal football team was optimistic as they went into Friday's homecoming game against the undefeated Pomeroy Pirates on October 18.

"In the first quarter, we marched down the field, putting positive plays together. But as usual, we could not score on our opening drive," said Coach Gabe Kiefel.

The Pirates scored twice in the first quarter and 28 points in the second. The Cardinals lost their starting quarterback, Isa Reyes, with a suspected concussion just before halftime.

Martin Vasquez stepped up to replace Reyes. In the second half, with a running clock and inexperience in their positions, the Cardinals struggled offensively and lost the game 56-0.

Waitsburg will play St John-Endicott Lacrosse (SJEL) at home on Friday, October 25. Coach Kiefel said the team has some work to do without quarterback Reyes. The Cardinals could finish third in the Wheat League if they beat SJEL. They would then play Sunnyside Christian or Mabton from the Grape League.
