Lyons ferry park closed due to algae bloom

LYONS FERRY - Washington State Parks has closed the swim beach at Lyons Ferry State Park due to the presence of blue-green algae. Algae is at its worst between September and October, according to the state health department.  The closure includes swimming, water skiing, and other water sports.

The park service warns pet owners to not let animals drink the water as the algae is toxic to pets and people. The park ranger on duty at the park over the weekend of October 19, said that a dog can die within six hours after drinking the water. She also advised park visitors to wear gloves when handling fish. 

 Microcystin is the toxin produced by cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae.  On that weekend, the microcystin level from the algae bloom was 140 micrograms per liter. The Washington State Department of Health advises that the safe level for recreational water is 6 mg/L.  Not all algae blooms produce toxins, but there is no visible way to know. The water may look clear and inviting but visitors to the park should check for warning signs posted before entering during the algae bloom season.
