Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - Waitsburg High School held its fall sports awards on December 5 to honor athletes who competed in cheerleading, volleyball, and football. Secondary Principal Joe Wirtzberger opened the ceremony, welcoming the parents and community members.
Cheerleading coach Vickie Hamann recognized fifteen cheerleaders who she said worked well together and had a fun season. She thanked the parents for providing team dinners and support.
Cedar Stegall *, Marion Duncan, Chasity Paddock *, Mylie Jones *, Mattilynn Carter *, Bea Karl *, Hope Adkins, Karissa Potts *, Sarah Daves *, Ava Childers, Pilar Diaz-Easton, Emerson Underwood, Chloe McCaw, Madison Strickland, Victoria Whitmore.
Team captain Stegall was named Most Valuable. Madison Strickland received the Most Improved Award and, Marion Duncan was voted Most Inspirational.
Volleyball Coach Jamie Smit introduced her team's athletes and presented the following honors:
Emma Hays – Most Improved,
Jessika Lambert – Best Serve
Morgan Lindsey and Makenzie Castillo – Most Encouraging
Makaelyn Mikesell – Best Bump and Jump Serve.
Madison Kaehler – Hardest Kills, Most Valuable Player, and honorable mention for All-Opponent Player.
Teammate Alyssa Hollingsworth – Most Competitive
Cheri Mathews – Coaches Award
Kayla Mikesell – Most Accurate Sets.
After thanking parents, staff, and community members, Football Coach Gabe Kiefel gave kudos to his players. The team finished the season in third place with a 6-4 record.
Players Leif Heckman, Dylan Gutierrez, JJ Gleason, Isaac Mahre*, Landon Henry, Isa Reyes, Martin Vazquez, Koyen Fortune, Brenton Segraves*, Tucker Hamilton, Victor Whitmore, Kyle Lindsey, Graycen Teal, Jarod Hankins, William Daves, Lucas VanHoose*, Jack Karl*, Will Ahler, and Cougar Anderson were acknowledged.

Tucker Hamilton – all-opponent linebacker and Defensive Player of the Year
JJ Gleason – All-Opponent Wide Receiver, Defensive Back, and Special Teams Player of the Year
Brenton Segraves – all-opponent linebacker
Koyen Fortune – all-opponent linebacker
Isa Reyes – all-opponent athlete/kicker/punter and Offensive Player of the Year
Teegan Kenney – Scout Player of the Year
Lucas VanHoose – All-Opponent Wide Receiver and Cardinal of the Year.
