Serving Waitsburg, Dayton and the Touchet Valley
WAITSBURG - The Lady Cardinals won two of three basketball games last week. The girls beat the Touchet team 39-34, beat St. John 44-23, but lost to Tekoa-Rosalia 61-15.
At Touchet on December 17, the girls played their best game of the season and came together as a team. The Cardinals came from behind in the fourth quarter to get the win. Alyssa Hollingworth led the team, scoring 27 points. Hannah Peralez played a key role in defense, being aggressive and getting steals.
"It was a fun game with the girls cheering each other on and really connecting on the court," said coach Kira Waggoner.
On December 20, the Cards played Tekoa-Rosalia in Waitsburg. The girls struggled against T-R's full-court press defense, losing 61–15. Coach Waggoner plans to work with her team on their press breaks over the winter break and said things will look different in the next game. Hollingsworth scored nine points in the loss, Jessika Lambert scored two and rebounded four, Peralez scored on two free throws and rebounded five, and Olivia Kiefel made two free throws.
On December 21, the team played at St. John in a game Coach Waggoner said was fun, and the girls worked hard for a 44-23 win.
The team got into foul trouble, so all the girls got a lot of playing time. Hollingsworth had 22 points, and Peralez had 13 points.
The girls' next game will be in Dayton against the Bulldogs on January 3.
