Cardinal JV basketball beats Colton

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg High School boys' varsity basketball lost against Colton on Saturday, January 11, on Kison Court. The Cardinals had a 27-19 lead at halftime before Colton came out and outscored the Cards in the second half to win 54-50.

"This is one we should have had," said Coach Westin Wallace. "We had a ten-point lead in the third quarter. Our passes got slow and telegraphed, and we missed a lot of layups," he added.

With about two minutes left in the third quarter, Colton took the lead: 34-33. The Cardinals had a chance to tie the game in the last minute and a half in the fourth when they were down 51-48, but the shots did not fall for the home team.

JJ Gleason led the team with 16 points, three assists, and two rebounds. Logan Seal added 12 points on four baskets, and Blake Benevides scored eight points, rebounded five, and had two assists and a steal. Jack Karl added two points, nine rebounds, and a steal. Teegan Kenney had a shot block, six rebounds, and six points.  Landen Henry scored five, rebounded two, and had one assist.  Rollin Carpenter pulled down three rebounds, and Issac Mahre contributed two rebounds.

Waitsburg junior varsity (JV) team beat Colton 46-31.

Liam Kiefel scored 12 points and rebounded five. Trace Nesje had a great first quarter, scoring eight points and ending the game with eight rebounds. Carter Barron scored eight points, Bryer Paul (7 rebounds) and Tyler Coulston scored seven each, and Alex Zuniga came off the bench to score four points and rebound thirteen.

At Garfield-Palouse (G-P) on Friday, January 10, the Cardinal boys' varsity team improved over their first time playing G-P. Coach Wallace said his team started pushing the ball and improving on defense.

Waitsburg lost 65-27 to the best team in the league.  Offensive highlights are Seal with 13 points and Benevides with eight.

The JV team lost 42-20 against G-P. Paul led the Cardinals with seven points. Zuniga had five points, Jake Lynch had four, and Kiefel and Carter scored two points each.
