WAITSBURG — The Waitsburg High School boys’ basketball coach, Westin Wallace, said the game against the Tekoa-Rosalia Timberwolves on Saturday, January 18, was the boys’ best complete game of the year. Winning 52 to 50, he said the boys did not panic and played solidly on both offense and defense.
“Everyone stepped up in different ways,” said Wallace.
JJ Gleason had four steals, hit two big free throws, and ended the game with nine points. Jackson Karl made two 3-point shots and many offensive rebounds. Blake Benavides had a career-high 19 points, and Logan Seal added 16 points and showed leadership skills at his point guard position. Teegan Kenney did a good job rebounding.
“The kids who did not play much supported their teammates, and the whole team earned the win,” said Wallace.
At Oakesdale, the Cardinals lost 80-31 on Friday, January 17.
“We played ourselves out of the game early, and Oakesdale is a good enough team to take advantage of that,” said Wallace.
Seal led the team with 12 points.
Waitsburg High School’s boys’ junior varsity team lost to Oakesdale and Tekoa-Rosalia.
“The JV boys led Tekoa-Rosalia most of the game but lost momentum in the fourth quarter,” said Wallace. “We are young, and we have a lot to learn, but the future is bright at Waitsburg.”
The Cardinals play on their home court on Friday, January 24, and Saturday, January 25. Coach Wallace would love to have the town come out to support the teams.
At the gym there will be a booth selling custom Waitsburg Cardinal socks as a fundraiser to purchase a shooting machine. The socks will sell for $17 a pair or $30 for two pairs. Donations will also be accepted.
Come support the Cardinals and check out the sock booth. The teams appreciate the community’s support!
