WAITSBURG — Last week, the Waitsburg Middle School girls basketball team played two close games. On Monday, February 10, the young Cardinals played Prescott at home on Kison Court and then traveled to Dayton on February 12.
“It was a pretty rough game against Prescott,” said Coach Karen Huwe. “Twenty-five fouls were called. There have not been that many total fouls in our last three games. But the girls stayed composed and had a good fourth quarter, scoring 10 points to secure the win.”
In the 16-14 win, Audrey Kiefel scored six points in the deciding fourth quarter. Kaitlyn Paul finished the game with four points, and Jaylynn Gleason, Laila Long, and Kayla Kuykendall each scored two points. Kiefel rebounded six and Paul seven to lead the Cardinals, outperforming the Tigers in rebounds.
At Dayton, both teams struggled to score. Dayton bettered Waitsburg in the second quarter with a 13-5 lead at halftime. Waitsburg scored six points in the third to narrow the gap to 15-11; however, Dayton prevailed with a final score of 20-17.
The Cardinal scorers were Gleason, Mady Potter, and Kuykendall with four points each, Kiefel three, and Paul added two.
“The girls did better at eliminating multiple offensive rebounds,” said Coach Huwe. “Laila Long pulled down a season-high nine boards to lead the team in outrebounding the Bulldogs. Defensively, we played more aggressively, with Kiefel getting five steals, Kuykendall four, and Long and Gleason having three steals each.”
The Lady Cardinals will play their last home game on Wednesday, February 19, against Rogers of College Place.
