WALLA WALLA - Waitsburg School District will host Whitman College for a Family Science Night on Thursday, March 6, in the Preston Hall gym. Whitman brings science nights to students and families in the fall and spring at different schools throughout the valley; this was the first time it was held in Waitsburg.
The event provided an interactive evening of science geared towards K-5 students and their families. Preston Hall was filled with parents watching their children get excited about science through engaging hands-on activities.
Over an hour, there were hands-on demonstrations in chemistry, biology, physics, geology, and math made possible through funding from the National Science Foundation.
The event took over 20 volunteers to help the students navigate and get the most out of each of the 12 stations. Waitsburg volunteers assisted the Whitman College faculty members, interns, and students who brought the engaging experience to Preston Hall.
Subjects at the stations included radial chromatography, make your own ice cream, catapults, magnification, fossil-making, and the always popular slime station. The students were able to take home their creations, including bird-coated pinecones and wiggly worms.
Whitman College was joined by the members of the Audubon Society, Tri-State Steelheaders, Sustainable Living Center, and the Water & Environmental Center, who added stations for their groups at the event.
The program's National Science Foundation funding is a three-year grant requiring the college to show active research and community impact and engagement.
The next Family Science Night will be at Davis Elementary School in College Place on April 3.
