Books for Bikes program starts March 24 through May 16.
WAITSBURG - Books for Bikes combines books and bikes to promote academic success and a love of reading. It is a joint venture of the Waitsburg Masonic Lodge #16, Waitsburg Elementary School, and the Weller Public Library. The Masonic Lodge generously donated eleven 20-inch bicycles and helmets. The program is open to all children living in Waitsburg or attending Waitsburg Elementary School.
Children will track their reading time, and for every hour of reading, they will earn a chance to win a bike. Younger children may need someone to read to them, which is fine.
Participating readers will have their names entered into a raffle on Friday, May 16. The more hours a child reads, the more entries they earn, which increases their chances of winning. The winners will choose a bike in the order their names are drawn and can only win one bike.
Reading logs must be submitted to the Weller Public Library or the Waitsburg Elementary School office by 8:30 a.m. on May 16.
Program leaders Rosy Nechodom and Weller Public Library Director Sarah Roberts hope the winners will ride their bikes in this year's Waitsburg's Celebration Day kiddie parade on Saturday, May 17.
Organizers encourage all Waitsburg children to participate and to enjoy reading.
