Dayton Schools prepare against funding cuts

DAYTON – The Dayton School Board met in the high school library at 5:30 p.m. on March 19, 2025. Superintendent Jeremy Wheatley, Board Chair Jeffrey McCowen, board members Aneesha Dieu, Grant Griffin, and Ryan Paulson were present. Pat Davidson was in attendance.

The board approved the consent agenda, including a gift of $269.70 to the Class of 2025 from the Class of 2025 parents. The consent agenda included the following personnel changes: Jack McCaw was hired as HS Assistant Baseball Coach, the resignation of Ajay McNarland as MS Head Volleyball Coach, and Vikki Griffin as a Food Service Assistant. New volunteers Kelly Steinhoff for HS/MS Track, Dustin Wolther for HS Track, Megan Forney for HS Softball, and Ethan Goodridge for HS Track were approved.

The Class of 2025 senior trip to Coeur d’Alene for June 3, 2025, was approved in the consent agenda. Twenty-five people, including chaperones, are expected to attend.

Lila Hutchens, the student representative to the board, said the ASB would organize the Touchet River Run, typically held in May, as a fundraiser.

In the Athletic Director’s Report, Sam Korslund provided the current registration numbers:

HS Softball: 18 

HS Baseball: 20 

HS Track: 11 

HS Golf: 10 

MS Softball: 7 

MS Baseball: 13 

MS Track: 18

Korslund also gave a shout-out to the district custodians for their excellent job preparing the outdoor venues for spring sports.

Principal Amy Cox said there were many reports of sickness from the school’s staff and students. She also said nine new students were inducted into the National Honor Society, raising the school’s NHS membership to fourteen members.

After listening to the budget report, the board conducted a second reading of several policies that required minor changes.

The board approved Resolution 20241-03 – Adoption of 2025-26 Reduced Educational Program. The action will allow the administration to analyze and make recommendations for educational programs should funding be cut and cuts become necessary.
