Cardinal Baseball Win Doubleheader

Waitsburg High School's boys' baseball team won both doubleheader games at St. John on Saturday, March 29.

This was the team's first competition of the season after games scheduled for March 25 were canceled due to the lack of umpires.

In the first game, the Cardinals won 20-2 behind the dominating pitching by Isaac Mahre who struck out seven with no walks. The strong defensive lineup consisted of Isa Ryes (catcher), Rollin Carpenter (1st base), Bryer Paul (2nd base), Jarod Hankins (3rd base), JJ Gleason (shortstop), Caleb Patrick (left field), Victor Whitmore (center field), and Ryan Meier (right field). The game ended due to the 10-run rule after the fifth inning.

On offense the team displayed plate discipline and aggressive baserunning. The Cardinals had seventeen hits in the game, thirteen bases on balls. and thirty stolen bases.

The Cardinals made a major come-back in the second game. They were down 4-15 after four innings. The team then held the Eagles scoreless in the last three innings while scoring fourteen runs for the 18-16 win. The Cardinals had a big seventh inning scoring nine runs to take both games of the doubleheader.

Bryer Paul started on the mound in the second game. In three innings he had four strikeouts and walked four. Cougar Anderson came in on relief, striking out one and walking one. Isa Reyes closed the game with five strikeouts, two walks, and hit a home run in the high scoring seventh inning.
