Cardinal varsity baseball doubleheaders and JV game against M-F

WAITSBURG - Waitsburg Cardinals had a busy week of baseball with games on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. They split with Walla Walla Valley Academy (WWVA), won both games of the doubleheader against Colton, lost a junior varsity game at Milton-Freewater, and then dropped both games of a doubleheader against Dayton.

The Cardinals had a tough game against WWVA, which had decent hitting, and the Cardinals lost 24-6. Jarod Hankins went 3 for 3 at bat in game one and had three RBIs.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Cardinals Isa Reyes hit a two-run home run, giving his team the momentum needed to secure the win.

Two position players took the mound for the first time this season against WWVA: Trace Nesje in the first game, and JJ Gleason pitched for the win, 10-6 in the second.

At Wednesday's doubleheader against Colton in Waitsburg, Isaac Mahre started on the mound for the Cardinals. Mahre had consistent pitches, the defense was aggressive, and there was strong batting and baserunning. The Cardinals won 13-3, ending the game after five innings due to the ten-run rule.

Colton came on strong in the second game of the doubleheader. Cardinal defensive errors kept the Wildcats in the lead most of the game. In the bottom of the seventh, with two outs and runners on second and third base, JJ Gleason drew a walk. During the commotion, Landon Henry stole home base, giving the Cardinals a 17-16 win.

"The junior varsity game against Milton-Freewater on Thursday, April 17, was a great learning experience and a good chance for the players to hone their skills. Cougar Anderson hit a massive triple to dead center," said Coach Joe Greer. "Ryan Meyer started on the mound, and our first baseman Rollin Carpenter tried his hand at pitching and did an excellent job. He was able to get the team out of a jam. Overall, they played well in the 11-2 loss."

Waitsburg lost both doubleheader games to Dayton 10-2 and 15-1 on April 18. No information was provided.
